Tinubu: Nigeria Remains a Strong Democracy Defending Religious Freedom
Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to democracy and the constitutional protection of religious liberty, stressing that the nation remains a model of coexistence and tolerance across faiths.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Presidency, Tinubu said Nigeria continues to uphold the constitutional guarantees that safeguard freedom of religion and belief for all citizens, describing claims of widespread religious intolerance as inconsistent with the nation’s true character and government policies.
“Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” President Tinubu said. “Since 2023, our administration has maintained active engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders while addressing security challenges that affect citizens across all regions and faiths.”
The President emphasised that religious freedom and tolerance have long been cornerstones of Nigeria’s identity and will remain so under his administration.
“The portrayal of Nigeria as a religiously intolerant country does not reflect our national reality,” he added. “We have made consistent and sincere efforts to protect the rights of every citizen, regardless of belief.”
Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s opposition to all forms of religious persecution and reaffirmed his government’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the United States and other international partners to safeguard communities of all faiths.
“Nigeria is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to strengthen understanding, dialogue, and the protection of religious communities everywhere,” the statement concluded.
