Honesty on Patrol: Delta Police Officer Praised for Returning Bag Filled With Cash, Phones, Jewellery

Asaba- Delta State
A police officer attached to the patrol unit of the Delta State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has drawn widespread commendation after returning a lost bag containing cash, mobile phones, jewellery, and other valuables to its rightful owner.

The officer, Sergeant Happy Atibaka, reportedly discovered the unattended bag during a routine patrol operation alongside fellow officers in the state. According to sources, the bag contained two mobile phones, a substantial amount of money, jewellery, and several important personal items.

Rather than leaving the matter unattended, Sergeant Atibaka immediately initiated efforts to trace the owner of the bag. Working together with ASP Eko and Sergeant Ogwu Chisom, the officers were able to identify and contact the owner before returning the items intact.

The owner, whose identity was not disclosed, expressed gratitude to the officers and the Nigeria Police Force for what was described as an exceptional act of honesty and professionalism.

“This is a rare gesture that deserves recognition,” the owner reportedly said, while commending the officers for their integrity and commitment to public service.
The incident has since generated positive reactions among residents and members of the public, many of whom described the officers’ conduct as a reflection of responsible policing and ethical service delivery.

Observers say acts such as this can help rebuild public trust in law enforcement institutions and encourage stronger cooperation between the police and communities they serve.
Calls have also emerged for the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, including the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and the Delta State Police Command, to recognise and reward officers who demonstrate integrity, discipline, and dedication in the line of duty.
