By Peter Legacy and Bernard Iwegbune
ASABA, DELTA STATE — The Member representing Aniocha South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Chief Isaac Ozoemezie Anwuzia, Ph.D., JP, has called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals of democracy, national unity, peaceful coexistence, and good governance as the nation celebrates Democracy Day.
In a message marking the annual celebration, Anwuzia joined millions of citizens across the country in reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing the nation’s democratic experience as a testament to the resilience, courage, and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
The lawmaker, who also serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Peace and Security, said Democracy Day presents an opportunity not only to celebrate the nation’s progress but also to reaffirm collective commitments toward building a more inclusive, prosperous, and equitable society.
“As we commemorate Democracy Day, I join millions of Nigerians in celebrating our nation’s democratic journey, the resilience of our people, and the enduring values of freedom, justice, unity, and good governance,” Anwuzia stated.
His remarks come at a time when Nigerians continue to evaluate the performance of democratic institutions and seek greater accountability, economic growth, and social development from elected leaders at all levels of government.
Democracy as a Foundation for Development
According to Anwuzia, democracy remains the most effective platform through which citizens can participate in governance and contribute meaningfully to national development.
He emphasized that democratic governance provides opportunities for representation, accountability, and public participation while creating an environment where citizens can freely express their views and aspirations.
“Democracy remains the cornerstone of national development, providing every citizen with a voice and the opportunity to contribute to the growth of our society,” he said.
Political analysts note that such sentiments reflect the growing recognition that strong democratic institutions are essential for sustainable development, peace, and social cohesion in Nigeria.
Tribute to Democratic Heroes
The Aniocha South legislator also paid tribute to the men and women whose sacrifices helped shape Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
He noted that Democracy Day remains a solemn reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists, political leaders, civil society groups, and ordinary Nigerians who fought to ensure that democratic governance became entrenched in the country’s political system.
“Today, we honor the sacrifices of our democratic heroes and renew our commitment to building a nation where peace, equity, and progress thrive,” he stated.
Observers say such acknowledgments are crucial in preserving the nation’s democratic memory and inspiring future generations to protect the gains of democracy.
Commitment to Legislative Excellence
Anwuzia used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to quality representation and people-centered governance.
Since assuming office as the representative of Aniocha South Constituency, he has consistently advocated policies aimed at improving security, community development, youth empowerment, and social welfare.
The lawmaker assured constituents that he would continue to pursue legislative initiatives designed to improve living standards, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote sustainable development throughout Delta State.
“As your representative in the Delta State House of Assembly, I remain dedicated to promoting legislation and initiatives that will enhance the welfare of our people, strengthen democratic institutions, and foster sustainable development across Aniocha South and Delta State at large,” he said.
His statement reflects the increasing expectation among constituents that elected officials should remain focused on delivering tangible benefits and responsive governance.
Call for Unity and Active Participation
Beyond governance, Anwuzia urged Nigerians to embrace tolerance, mutual respect, and civic responsibility as essential ingredients for national progress.
He stressed that democracy can only flourish when citizens actively participate in governance processes, respect differing opinions, and work collectively toward shared national goals.
“Let us continue to uphold the principles of democracy through active participation, mutual respect, and unwavering support for peaceful coexistence. Together, we can build a brighter and more prosperous future for our communities and our nation,” he said.
The lawmaker’s message aligns with broader calls across the country for increased citizen engagement, peaceful political participation, and stronger collaboration between government and the governed.
Looking Ahead
As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day anniversary, Anwuzia’s message serves as both a celebration of democratic achievements and a reminder of the responsibilities that accompany democratic freedoms.
His emphasis on peace, accountability, development, and citizen participation underscores the continuing relevance of democratic values in addressing contemporary national challenges.
For many residents of Aniocha South and beyond, the message reinforces the importance of leadership that prioritizes service, inclusiveness, and the collective well-being of the people.
As the celebrations continue across the federation, the lawmaker’s call resonates with a central theme of Democracy Day: that the future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the commitment of both leaders and citizens to uphold the principles of freedom, justice, unity, and good governance.
“Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria,” Anwuzia concluded, expressing optimism that the nation will continue to advance toward greater peace, prosperity, and democratic consolidation.
