THE WORLD
UN DEBATE DEEPENS OVER AUTONOMOUS WEAPONS
The United Nations is facing renewed debate over the future of autonomous weapons and the extent to which machines should be allowed to make decisions in warfare.
The divide remains between countries pushing for stronger international controls and those resisting a binding timetable.
The debate reflects a wider global concern over artificial intelligence, military technology and the need to ensure that human beings remain responsible for critical decisions involving the use of force.
For the international community, the challenge is increasingly about whether technology is moving faster than global regulation.
UNITED STATES
DEMOCRATS TAKE CONTROL OF CONGRESS AFTER MIDTERM ELECTION
The 2026 United States midterm elections have produced a major shift in Washington, with Democrats on course to control both chambers of Congress.
The result represents a significant political setback for President Donald Trump and is expected to reshape the balance of power in Washington for the remainder of his term.
Democratic control of Congress could mean tougher scrutiny of the administration, more aggressive congressional investigations and greater difficulty for the White House in advancing its legislative agenda.
The political consequences are likely to extend beyond Washington as both parties begin positioning for the next presidential cycle.
Financial markets have also remained volatile, with technology stocks recovering during the week but the Nasdaq still heading towards a fourth consecutive weekly decline.
UNITED KINGDOM
SECURITY CONCERNS RAISE PRESSURE ON BROADCASTERS
Security concerns involving bomb threats against a major UK broadcaster have again highlighted the vulnerability of media organisations operating in an increasingly polarised environment.
The incidents have renewed discussions about the protection of journalists, broadcasting infrastructure and public institutions.
For the media industry, the message is clear: editorial independence increasingly comes with heightened security responsibilities.
AFRICA
SOUTH AFRICA: ANC SUPPORT SLUMPS IN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
South Africa’s African National Congress is facing one of its most difficult electoral performances as counting continues in the country’s 2026 municipal elections.
With about 90 per cent of votes counted, the ANC was around 32 per cent, while the Democratic Alliance was about 24 per cent.
The results point to a continuing erosion of the ANC’s once-dominant position and a highly fragmented political landscape.
The outcome will be closely watched across Africa because South Africa remains one of the continent’s most influential democracies.
The bigger question is not only who wins individual municipalities, but whether voters are signalling a deeper demand for political change, improved service delivery and greater accountability.
NIGERIA
TINUBU APPROVES IBOM DEEP-SEA PORT, AIRPORT UPGRADE
President Bola Tinubu has approved the proposed Ibom Deep-Sea Port and the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport in Akwa Ibom State to international airport status.
The President announced the approvals during his visit to Uyo on Friday.
Tinubu is also commissioning several projects completed by the Akwa Ibom State Government, including facilities around the Victor Attah International Airport.
The visit forms part of a two-state trip taking the President from Akwa Ibom to Rivers State, where he is expected to attend an APC rally in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
For the South-South region, the proposed deep-sea port carries potentially significant implications for trade, logistics, industrialisation and regional connectivity.
The real test, however, will be implementation — timelines, financing, construction and measurable economic benefits.
2027 POLITICAL WATCH
COURT RULING CREATES NEW UNCERTAINTY FOR ADC AND ATIKU
The 2027 political landscape has been shaken by a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja nullifying the David Mark-led leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress.
The judgment also affected decisions arising from that structure, including the process through which former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.
The ADC has rejected the implications of the judgment and moved to appeal the decision, while asking that no consequential action be taken pending determination of its legal challenge.
The development introduces another layer of uncertainty into the opposition’s preparations for 2027.
For voters, the important issue is increasingly becoming whether the emerging political alliances can survive internal disputes, legal challenges and the pressures of a national election.
STATES
SOKOTO: POLITICAL TENSION AHEAD OF 2027
Political debate is intensifying in Sokoto State following allegations by former Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of political intolerance.
The claims have become part of the wider contest for political influence ahead of 2027.
As always, allegations remain allegations until established by competent authorities or supported by independently verified evidence.
The bigger story is the growing political competition across northern Nigeria as parties begin consolidating their structures ahead of the next general election.
ANAMBRA: 2,205 NYSC MEMBERS SWORN IN
A total of 2,205 prospective National Youth Service Corps members have been sworn in as members of Batch C Stream II in Anambra State.
The new corps members are expected to begin their national service across communities in the state.
Beyond the ceremony, the programme continues to raise questions about how national service can better connect young Nigerians with skills, entrepreneurship opportunities and community development.
RIVERS: TINUBU SET FOR APC RALLY
President Tinubu is expected in Port Harcourt on Saturday for an APC campaign rally.
The event is expected to draw party leaders, supporters and political stakeholders from across the state’s 23 local government areas.
But beyond the size of the crowd will be a more important political question:
Does the mobilisation translate into genuine grassroots support?
That is the question every major political rally will face as 2027 approaches.
OYO: APC MOVES TOWARDS RECONCILIATION
The APC in Oyo State is intensifying reconciliation efforts involving key political figures as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.
Among those involved in the latest engagement are Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Akeem Agbaje and former Governor Teslim Folarin.
President Tinubu is also expected in Ibadan later this month.
The reconciliation effort reflects a familiar reality of Nigerian politics: electoral strength often depends not only on party structures but on the ability to manage internal disagreements before the campaign reaches full intensity.
KANO: APC STRENGTHENS GRASSROOTS MOBILISATION
The APC is stepping up grassroots mobilisation in Kano as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
The focus is increasingly moving from high-level endorsements to ward structures, local networks and voter engagement.
In a state with enormous electoral weight, the strength of grassroots organisation could prove decisive.
DELTA POLITICAL WATCH
APC 2027 CAMPAIGN TAKES OFF IN ISOKO SOUTH
The All Progressives Congress has formally commenced its 2027 campaign activities in Delta State, with a major political gathering in Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa were among the prominent political figures associated with the campaign mobilisation.
The programme later moved to Ozoro, bringing together APC leaders, supporters and stakeholders from across the state.
For the APC, the campaign is an opportunity to present its record, consolidate its political structure and sell its vision ahead of 2027.
For voters, however, the campaign should go beyond rallies and political speeches.
They will want answers on infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, economic opportunities and the delivery of previously announced projects.

DELTA DEVELOPMENT WATCH
FROM INVESTMENT SUMMIT TO IMPLEMENTATION: OLAM AGRI BEGINS ANIMAL-FEED PLANT PROJECT IN OGWASHI-UKU
OGWASHI-UKU, ANIOCHA SOUTH LGA, DELTA STATE
A major industrial project has begun taking shape in Ogwashi-Uku with the commencement of Olam Agri’s animal-feed production plant.
The project is being positioned as an important development for Delta State’s agricultural and industrial economy, with the proposed facility expected to serve the poultry and livestock value chains across the South-South and South-East.
The Delta State Government has allocated 99.99 hectares of land for the project.
SMART UFOH: INDUSTRIALISATION MUST PRODUCE SKILLS
Commissioner for Technical Education, Hon. Smart Ijeoma Ufoh, brings a particularly relevant perspective to the development, having previously held senior management responsibilities within Olam.
His involvement provides an important link between industrial investment and Delta State’s technical education agenda.
For NOL24, the opportunity goes beyond the construction of a factory.
The project should create pathways for technical training, internships, apprenticeships, technology transfer and employment opportunities for young people.
That is where industrial investment can begin to produce a wider economic multiplier.
ISAAC ANWUZIA: HOST COMMUNITY BENEFITS MUST BE MEASURABLE
For Hon. Isaac Ozoemezie Anwuzia, who represents Aniocha South in the Delta State House of Assembly, the project has direct significance for his constituency.
Beyond the plant itself, the surrounding economy could benefit from logistics, transport, services, agriculture, local procurement and new business opportunities.
But the key question will be whether these opportunities translate into measurable benefits for residents of Ogwashi-Uku and Aniocha South.
OBOREVWORI’S INVESTMENT DRIVE
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has presented the project as part of Delta’s broader push towards agriculture, industrialisation, investment and job creation.
The project comes against the backdrop of the state’s efforts to attract private-sector investment.
For NOL24’s Delta Economic Dashboard, the significance lies in the movement from investment promotion to actual implementation.
An investment summit produces commitments.
A project breaking ground is a different stage.
The ultimate test is what happens next.
How many jobs will be created?
How many Delta residents will be trained?
What opportunities will be available to local farmers and businesses?
When will the facility become operational?
What measurable economic value will it generate?
These are the questions NOL24 will continue to track.
THE DELTA ECONOMIC DASHBOARD
The Olam Agri project gives Delta State an opportunity to demonstrate that investment attraction can move beyond announcements into production, employment and measurable economic activity.
NOL24 will continue tracking the project from construction to commissioning and beyond.
TRACKING INVESTMENTS.
MEASURING DEVELOPMENT.
DEMANDING RESULTS.
ASABA WATCH
ASABA HOSTS 45TH NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSIONS
Asaba is hosting the 45th Annual National Council of Civil Service Commissions of the Federation, bringing senior public-service officials and stakeholders to the Delta State capital.
The gathering places Asaba at the centre of discussions around public-sector administration, recruitment, capacity development and institutional efficiency.
For Delta, such national events also provide an opportunity to showcase the state capital and strengthen its position as a regional administrative and conference destination.
NOL24 QUESTION
2027: WHAT SHOULD VOTERS DEMAND BEFORE THEY VOTE?
As political parties intensify their mobilisation ahead of 2027, NOL24 believes voters should move beyond slogans and ask measurable questions.
What has been promised?
What has been delivered?
What remains outstanding?
How much has been spent?
Who has benefited?
When will outstanding projects be completed?
And most importantly:
WHAT CONSEQUENCES SHOULD FOLLOW WHEN POLITICAL PROMISES ARE NOT KEPT?
