WORLD WATCH: TRUMP HEADS TO UN AS IRAN CONFLICT ENTERS 7TH MONTH

President Donald Trump is set to face world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly as the US-Iran conflict continues into its seventh month.

The war, now centred on Iran’s nuclear programme and disruption of global shipping routes in the Gulf, continues to roil energy markets. Oil prices remain volatile, with analysts warning of knock-on effects on inflation and global trade if the disruption persists.

UK & AFRICA WATCH

In the United Kingdom, retail sales rose by 0.5% in August, beating forecasts and giving the pound a lift. Analysts say higher energy costs and sticky inflation remain a concern for households.

In a separate development, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin reaffirmed their commitment to the Good Friday Agreement.

In Africa, Washington has given the UN an additional one-year window to transition its logistical support for the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia. The mission remains key to countering al-Shabaab and stabilising Somalia.

NATIONAL WATCH: 37 DETAINEES DIE IN NIGER, FG SUSPENDS NSCDC COMMANDANT

The Federal Government has suspended the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) after 37 people died in custody following operations against suspected illegal miners.

The deaths sparked protests in Minna on Thursday. The NSCDC had initially suggested a possible disease outbreak in the detention facility, but the cause has not been conclusively established. The Minister of Interior has ordered a full probe.

The Niger State Government has also cancelled an APC rally earlier scheduled for Saturday in Minna.

POLITICAL WATCH: RAINBOW COALITION DEBATE REACHES STATE STRUCTURES

The debate around the so-called Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections is spreading to state chapters.

In Bayelsa, State APC Chairman Warman Weri Ogoriba has publicly rejected the coalition, insisting the party will rely on its existing grassroots structures.

The development comes after APC governors, led by Progressive Governors Forum Chairman Hope Uzodimma, warned at a meeting in Abuja against any parallel structure capable of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 bid.

For Delta: NOL24 notes that the real question is not who is aligning with whom, but what these realignments mean for party organisation and governance in Delta State.

LAGOS, ANAMBRA, OYO & BAYELSA

In Lagos, the State House of Assembly has waded into a land dispute involving the Ojaekomo and Ojomu royal families, while traffic management along the Lagos-Ibadan corridor remains in focus after another crash involving three trucks. Eight persons escaped unhurt.

In Anambra, the Police Command rescued a kidnapped victim and arrested seven suspects in separate operations – two in Nimo, Njikoka LGA, and five suspected members of an armed robbery gang. A suspected stolen tricycle was recovered.

In Oyo, the state has become the 26th state to adopt the Nigeria Learning Passport in partnership with UNICEF to expand digital learning. The Police Command also presented N37.89 million insurance cheques to families of 48 officers who died in service.

In Bayelsa, the government has begun demolition of structures encroaching on government rights-of-way to enforce town planning regulations.

 DELTA WATCH: SECURITY CONCERN IN NDOKWA WEST

In Delta State, farming communities in Ndokwa West LGA have raised fresh security concerns following an alleged attack on a rubber tapper and his 12-year-old son along a bush path between Emu Ebendo and Umusam Ogbe.

Residents say fear over farmland access is growing. NOL24 will seek official response from security agencies. For these communities, security is about food, income and livelihood.

ASABA WATCH: NEW DIALYSIS CENTRE AT FMC ASABA

In Asaba, a new dialysis centre built by the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s His Love Foundation has been unveiled at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.

The centre is expected to expand access to kidney care in Delta. Focus will now shift to capacity, affordability, maintenance and long-term sustainability.
